In 2009, the children and I moved to Lafayette. I was going through a very rough time after my cancer treatment had completed and I knew that I needed to do something bigger than myself! I started volunteering at Miles Perret Cancer Services and shorty after that, I was hired as a Service Coordinator. MPCS is such a wonderful organization…it was a true blessing to help other cancer patients through their journey. I started to notice the joys and heartbreaks of their journey helped me heal. It hit me that when I was going through my treatment, my only support outside of my family was the Leukemia Lymphoma Society’s online support group. I was alone in my feelings of failure, grief and burden. I began to realize that THIS WAS MY PURPOSE! My passion for helping cancer patients exploded! I was determined to go the extra mile for each client. I didn’t want anyone to feel alone, or like a failure, or they were a burden, or that they were worthless. I wanted them to feel safe and supported.

A few years later, MPCS started an outreach program where I would visit patients in the treatment centers in Lafayette. These visits were very different than when the clients went to MPCS. It was raw! To sit beside a patient receiving their 1st treatment is quite humbling. To sit beside a patient who is starting treatment again and again is humbling. To sit next to a patient who is not responding to treatment is humbling. The patients would say the most profound things, I often felt that they were delivering messages from God. The physicians, nursing staff, support staff were incredible…I wanted to be a part of that team!!

Almost 3 years ago, I started helping cancer patients in a different way at OncoLogics. Not only do I get to tell Acadiana about the awesome care that our physicians and team provide, and that we offer the most innovative radiation treatment options, I get to be a part of a team who each demonstrate their own passion to help cancer patients. It is quite motivating when you see every team member taking special care of every patient. One of the most exciting and fulfilling aspects of my job, is being able to implement patient support programs that our physicians are passionate about because they want the patient to have the best outcome in their cancer journey. We have put into place very successful programs including a Head and Neck Cancer Program, Survivorship Workshops, Lymphedema Support Group and THRIVE 365 Nutrition & Fitness Program which focuses on nutrition, physical and mental wellness. These programs are so important in helping patients obtain a healthy survivorship.
