Apr 12, 2024
April guest speaker, retired educator Claire Manes, Ph.D, for many years searched for her grandfather who spent his final eight years as a patient at the Carville, Louisiana leprosarium. Her book Out of the Shadow of Leprosy is the result of that journey. Most recently, Claire Manes has partnered with Anne Harmon Brett to create the photo documentary “Leprosy the Separating Sickness.”
Their photo documentary, which will be on display at the Acadian Cultural Center (The Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve) in Lafayette, Louisiana throughout April and May of 2024, features pictures taken at Carville by photographer and patient Johnny Harmon, whose images capture the humanity and community of the patients there in residence. The exhibit is sponsored by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities and will be free to the public.
