July 2024 - Christy Benoit Castille - Louisiana Folklife Artist

Louisiana Folklife Artist Christy Benoit Castille first became interested in "Shuttle Tatting," the ancient art of knotting delicate thread into handmade lace, as a young teen after seeing her great grandmother’s handwork. Christy attended her first workshop over 40 years ago, and decided then to devote her life to learning and preserving this timeless craft. As challenging as "Shuttle Tatting" is, Christy continually pushes the boundaries of the art by including fibers that would not have been used in the 1800s, like Acadian Brown Cotton of Louisiana. Christy's demonstrations and teaching workshops can be found throughout Louisiana's various cultural fairs and festivals, and farmers' markets. In her dedication to weaving our heritage to the next generation, she asks “What is Your Story?” so that those family stories are not forgotten.
